Coffee shops to work from in Puerto Escondido

Laptop-friendly cafés

Puerto Escondido has long been a destination for surfers and in recent years, has become a popular place for digital nomads too. There are several colivings and you see people working on their laptops at every corner. These are the coffee shops Charlie has worked from during her stay in Puerto Escondido. This selection is limited to cafés in La Punta and Zicatela as those were within a 20-minute walking distance from her accommodation in Tamarindos. There are coffee shops in Rinconada and near Carrizalillo beach too, but Charlie has not tried to work from there.

Laptop-friendly cafés in Zicatela

Guiño Café

This coffee shop is the only one that Charlie could find with an ocean view. Guiño Café is at Zicatela beach, and you enter through a gate in between the shops on the opposite side of the road. You take the stairs to your left and reach the small café with seating that provides the best view over the beach. If you get a spot there, you also have plugs. If those seats are taken, you can find another table, however those are further away from the plugs and not suitable for a mouse. There is good Wi-Fi and coffee. They offer a small selection of sandwiches.

Opening hours: Daily 7.30 am to 4 pm*

Location: Av. Del Morro, Playa Zicatela, 70934 Puerto Escondido, Oax., Mexico

Guino Cafe in Puerto Escondido

Elephant Garden

This café is a bit harder to find because it is in a side road near the beach. You walk up to the end of this road where you see a large mural. Elephant Garden is to the right and you enter the café through their artisan shop. The seating within a bamboo garden is easy to miss from the outside. Their offer a full lunch menu as well as coffee and cakes. There are plugs that are mostly used for the fans. If you need to charge your laptop, it is best to bring an extension lead.

Opening hours: Friday to Tuesday 8 am to 2.30 pm*

Location: Al fondo de Callejon de la Iguana, Las Olas s/n, Playa Zicatela, 70934 Brisas de Zicatela, Oax., Mexico

Café Mar y Cielo

This small, family-owned café is similar to Elephant Garden in the sense that it is a bit hidden at the end of a side road and you sit in a garden. Their menu is more focused on breakfast, and it was very quiet when Charlie was there. The staff at Café Mar y Cielo was very attentive and Charlie could tell that it is family-owned. There are Wi-Fi and plugs and they have fans at every table.

Opening hours: Daily 8 am to 4.30 pm*

Location: Cerca de, Azucenas 729, Sta Maria, 70934 Brisas de Zicatela, Oax., Mexico

Café Amarisa

Barrio Café

Almost at the other end of the high street, also in a side road, is Barrio Café. The seating is in a beautiful garden, and they have several breakfast options. As inspiring as the garden seating is for creative work, there are, unfortunately no plugs. You can use the Wi-Fi of the hostel next door. However, it wasn’t working when Charlie was there.

Café Allora

Two blocks further up the road from Café Barrio is Café Allora. It has a beer garden vibe and a bar but is very quiet in the mornings. There’s no food, but great coffee and Charlie was offered homemade cookies by one of the baristas (for free, out of a Tupperware). Depending on the time of day, there are only a few tables in the shade. They have large fans, Wi-Fi and plugs.

Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday 7.30 am to 3.30 pm*

Location: Guerrero 151, Brisas de Zicatela, 70934 Brisas de Zicatela, Oax., Mexico

Café Malagua

About halfway down the high street in La Punta is Café Malagua. Their great breakfast and lunch offer makes it a busy place. You either work with your laptop at the bar or get a day pass for the coworking on the third floor for MXN 250 (approximately GBP 11) per day. This includes water, a coffee and fruits and you can also get a half-day pass. There is a waiter in the coworking area and you can get the same food that is served downstairs.

There are powerplugs and Wi-Fi and Charlie was even given a mousepad. She only found the tables a bit high and had to place some cushions on the seat.

Opening hours: Thursday to Monday 8 am to 3.30 pm, Wednesday 9 am to 3.30pm*

Location: Av Alejandro Cardenas Esquina, Hidalgo 388, Brisas de Zicatela, 70934 Puerto Escondido, Oax., Mexico

Mare Café

A bit further down the high street and on the other side of the road is Mare Café. You enter through a restaurant that only opens later in the day and take the stairs to the left. They serve some light meals, have plugs and Wi-Fi. They place a fan close to you to keep you comfortable in the heat.

There are seats where you can overlook the high street and you might be tempted to get an ice cream at the Fine Gelateria opposite on your way out.

Opening hours: Daily 8 am to 2 pm*

Location: Alejandro Cardenas Peralta, punta Zicatela 70934 Puerto Escondido, 70934 Oaxaca, Oax., Mexico

Sandala

This was the café nearest to Charlie’s accommodation in Puerto Escondido, Surfbreak Coliving. Café Sandala is in a road where you wouldn’t easily expect a café and the seating is in a garden behind the building. There are tables and sofas, and they serve some light meals and good coffee. Sandala is proudly run by a group of women.

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 7.30 am to 2 pm*

Location: Tamarindos 169, Los Tamarindos, 70934 Puerto Escondido, Oax., Mexico

Cafe Sandala in Puerto Escondido

Most of the cafés in Puerto Escondido close quite early. If you need a place that is open longer, there is a Tierra de Café in each part of town. Charlie usually avoids chains and hasn’t worked from there for that reason.
