Sunset Open and Santa Cruz Pro cancelled

The WSL CT has been put on hold once again

After the 2020 season had been cancelled due to Covid-19, the hopes were high for 2021 with a new tour schedule and a new structure of the entire championship. Shortly after the events had started in Hawaii in December 2020, they had to be put on hold due to Covid-19 cases within staff and a shark attack.

After a short hold, the Maui Pro presented by Roxy and the Billabong Pipemasters presented by Hydro Flask came to a successful end in Hawaii. John John Florence and Tyler Wright were off to a great start.

No surfing in surfer’s paradise

On 5th January 2021, the Hawaiian government released an official statement suspending all surf competitions until further notice. Following the announcement, the WSL has cancelled the next CT event that was planned for the second half of January, the Sunset Open in Hawaii.

In the sense of health and safety and amidst a raising number of Covid-19 cases in California, also the February event, the Santa Cruz Pro, has been cancelled. It is not safe for staff and athletes to travel in these times. The next planned event of the CT 2021 season is the Ripcurl Pro Bells Beach in Australia between 1st and 11th April. Charlie will keep an eye on the next decisions by the WSL.
