Silvana Lima sponsored by Kore cryptocurrency
Surfing meets Crypto
Silvana Lima, a competitor in the women’s WSL World Championship Tour, has been struggling for a long time to get sponsors. The Brazilian surfer who came from a humble background has been competing on the CT since 2008 and came second that same year and the following year. She is currently ranked #88 on the World Surf League and is now sponsored by the cryptocurrency Kore which makes her the first female athlete to be sponsored by a cryptocurrency.
What is Kore?
Kore, formerly known as KoreCoin, is a cryptocurrency focused on privacy and security for financial transactions, phone calls and online activities. As such the platform speaks of itself as promoting freedom and creates a connection to the freedom-loving surf culture. The Logo reads “Kore – Surf’s Up!”
“[..]KORE Realizes these Freedoms perfectly align with the Freedom Loving Culture of Surfers. Free,… out there on the Ocean Waves. We will be Surfing the Internet freely once more “Hanging Ten Digits” […]” (cited as per https://kore.life/ on 02/05/2020)
Kore has chosen Silvana Lima as the surfer to sponsor because of her charitable engagement to help impoverished children in relation to her surf school Surf & Stand Up.
Crypto meets Surfing
A surfer being sponsored by a crypto currency is a first in the history of surfing. We are used to sponsors within the traditional surf brands for clothing and surf gear, we are also used to adventure related brands such as GoPro and Jeep and technology companies within the mobile phone industry. Charlie was surprised to also see Harley-Davidson in that context at the Quiksilver Pro France 2019 and we can look forward to what else might come in the future.
Surfing has turned into a worldwide renowned sport by now and it keeps on growing. What started in the 1990s with the Momentum Generation is by now a big player on the athletic field and as of 2020 officially an Olympic sport. We are excited about the future of surfing!
