Protect the best surf breaks around the world
Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica is the next World Surfing Reserve
The organization Save the Waves has awarded the next World Surfing Reserve: Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica. With this prestigious title, Playa Hermosa joins the ranks with the Gold Coast in Australia and Malibu and California amongst 10 other surf beaches around the world.
Save the Waves is a non-profit organization dedicated to the environmental protection of surf ecosystems. Every year, surf destinations can apply for the award, but only one each year is awarded the title of World Surfing Reserve (WSR).
In partnership with local communities, Save the Waves protects the surf breaks and their surroundings. The core criteria to become awarded are:
- quality and consistency of the wave(s)
- environmental characteristics
- culture and surf history
- governance capacity and local support
Gustavo Segura Sancho, Costa Rica’s Tourism Minister, said:
“We are thrilled that our beautiful Playa Hermosa has been added to the prestigious WSR list. With more than 900 miles of coastline and ideal surfing conditions year-round, Costa Rica offers a wealth of surfing opportunities for both novices and experienced surfers.”
Playa Hermosa is renowned for consistent waves and outstanding nature and popular for surfing. More information can be found at the official site of the Costa Rica Tourism Board.
