Surf and Work
Co-Working in Corralejo
As Charlie had been at the Billabong Surf Camp, the best on the island of Fuerteventura, many times before, she had already seen everything there was to see in Fuerteventura and she knew that after the surf sessions in the morning, she would have time in the afternoon to get some work done.
When she had been in Corralejo a few months before, Susanna had told her about a co-working space in Corralejo which seemed to be the perfect option for Charlie. She had found all the information she needed about The Hub online and had booked a trial day. She went there straight after the first surfing session. It is close to the harbour and is a 15-minute walk from the Billabong Surf Camp.
Unfortunately, The Hub coworking closed during the COVID-19 lockdown and didn’t reopen. There are now several other coworking spaces in town and the best is for you to just show up at the space and enquire directly. The answer rates via email have been low when Charlie tried to contact them.
During another stay in Corralejo, Charlie decided to work from CoNomad Fuerteventura as they had longer opening hours than all the others.
The price for one day of co-working is €15, €80 for a whole week or €225 for a month. You could also book accommodation, but Charlie stayed at the Billabong Surf Camp.
New Co-Workers, new opportunities
On her first day at The Hub, Charlie met Emily who was from Ireland and worked in digital marketing. She was spending every winter a few weeks in Corralejo and had been working from The Hub for years. She told Charlie about the Yoga classes she did in Corralejo and Charlie was particularly interested in the yoga at the beach. She decided to join Emily for the class the next morning at 9 a.m.
The class lasted an hour and Charlie bought a 3-class pack for €30. It was a gentle form of yoga – exactly what Charlie needed in between the surf. She enjoyed the practice hearing the sound of the waves in the background.
Another place to work from
Charlie would have a surf lesson that day at 13.30 and it wasn’t really worth walking all the way to The Hub for that short time. From the yoga beach, it would have been a 30-minute walk and Charlie had to be back at the camp at 1 to get ready for the surf.
Two days before, Charlie had been walking around the area to take photos of some kite surfers and she had discovered an amazing coffee shop right by the beach. The tables were protected from the wind by windows, there was even a pool and a view towards the sea. Punta Elena, a hotel with a public café and bar by the beach, was only a 5-minute walk from the yoga beach and Charlie decided to give this one a try.
You never know beforehand if the Wi-Fi would be good enough to work from there. It was. Charlie can highly recommend that place. The service is good, the view amazing and the internet connection stable. There are no power plugs, so better charge your laptop before heading there!
The conditions in Corralejo seem to be perfect for a digital nomad. With so much choice of places to work from, the balance between surf and work can easily be established.
