Monkeys of Costa Rica
If you can’t see them, you can hear them
If you’re in Costa Rica and you wake up at 5 a.m. by a sound that could easily be a lion, don’t panic. It is not a lion, it’s the howler monkeys. They’re just communicating with each other. There are 4 common types of monkeys in Costa Rica and Charlie captured photos of three of them:
Howler monkeys
The howler monkeys are black and you will hear them before you see them, because they’re howling.
Spider monkeys
This type of monkey gets it’s name from a mark on their face that looks like a spider web. Their fur is red-brown.
White-faced capuchin
As the name suggests, these monkeys have a white face and they are a little smaller than the howler and spider monkeys. Charlie got to capture them close up in the Osa Peninsula:
There is a fourth type of monkey common in Costa Rica, the squirrel monkey, but Charlie does not recall having seen them.
Monkeys are generally easy to spot as they move a lot in the trees and sometimes even fight over some delicious fruits. Whenever you hear the leaves of a tree moving, it is worth looking up.
