Sailing Day 3: Kimolos to Serifos

Another village up the hill

The third day of sailing in Greece started with a coffee at the same coffee shop they had been the afternoon before at the harbour of Kimolos. There was a new face on the table: Julio, a friend of Pablo from Argentina, had arrived early in the morning. He had taken the ferry from Athens to join the crew in Kimolos.

They left the island of Kimolos right after breakfast and sailed back to Serifos, where they had anchored in a bay the first day. This time they would anchor at the marina and go on land. Charlie had taken the helm and the sea had gotten a bit more agitated than the days before. It was suddenly a lot more difficult to keep on course. At the same time, they were properly sailing that day (no cheating with the engine) and Charlie had to work with the wind. That was easier said than done and she got confused by what everybody was trying to tell her. She finally found the course and they arrived safely in Serifos.

At “Captains”

It was early afternoon when they landed in Serifos and the first stop was: lunch at “Captains”. Julio ordered a typical Greek dish called “Dakos”. It appeared in the salads section of the menu but was more like a giant Bruschetta with Feta cheese, Tomatoes and Olives. Charlie liked what she saw at his plate and ordered the same. Since they were finally in a place with power plugs and strong Wifi, Charlie made use of the opportunity and got some work done in the afternoon. The others went to the beach. Once again, Charlie noticed, that sailing trips aren’t quite suitable for digital nomads. One simply can’t predict when they would have a good internet connection or for how long they would have to run on an empty battery.

Are they all called The Chora?

They met back on the boat at 7.30 to go for dinner, but it ended up being 8.30 when they actually left. Like the evening before in Kimolos, they would eat at a restaurant in the village up the hill that was again called “The Chora” or “The Village”. Charlie would have expected more creativity on the Greek islands, but at least you always knew where you would have to go for traditional food. On Serifos, the hill was a bit steeper and it was a longer distance which is why they took the bus up to the village.

Once they had reached the top, Vangelis guided the crew into some quiet, little corners from where they could have the best views over the island and the whole bay. Charlie wished she had gotten up there a little earlier to properly take the time for photos. In a group of 6, there is simply not enough time to find the right settings for a lovely night shot. They walked halfway down the hill again to a traditional Greek taverna. This time, they were lucky as a table had just cleared. From the terrace, they could enjoy stunning views towards the harbour at night. The moon was still almost full and again blood red as it rose over the horizon that night.
