Coffee shops to work from in Playa de las Américas
Coffee and lunch for digital nomad surfers
Charlie spent a week at the Blackstone Surfcamp in Tenerife. The surf camp is near Adeje along the west coast whereas the surf centre is in Playa de las Américas. There is a transfer between the two places every day according to the schedule of the surf lessons. Charlie wasn’t on holiday; she had to work a bit whilst in Tenerife but she hadn’t booked a coliving like the one in Gran Canaria. She usually went down to Playa de las Américas with the transfer in the morning, had a surf lesson, and lunch and worked from a coffee shop near the beach in the afternoon until the transfer went back to the camp.
Charlie was unlucky the first day when she went to a coffee shop where she was refused the WiFi password. She could see that there was a dedicated WiFi for that place, but every waiter pretended to not know the password. That had never happened to Charlie before. Luckily, she discovered two other places where she and her laptop were very welcome, and they even served great Italian coffee.
Friends of the Ocean
This is a coffee shop and restaurant directly opposite the Blackstone Surf Centre. There’s no sea view, but amazing coffee, food, friendly people, WiFi, and other digital nomads. Throughout the week Charlie kept on seeing the same people around with laptops and headsets, most of them had work calls in English.
Friends of the Ocean is run by Italians, but all waiters speak fluent English and Spanish too. In the mornings, you have to order inside where you have a great selection of Italian pastries. From 12 onwards they also serve lunch, and you can choose from an extensive menu. There are no power plugs as the seating is only outside, but a stable WiFi connection – even if there are multiple people on calls. You could easily stay there the whole day to work.

La Ola Surf Bar
Funny enough, this is another bar run by Italians and it is located on the other side of the building where the Blackstone Surf Centre is: La Ola Surf Bar. The seating is a little less comfortable than at Friends of the Ocean and you can hear some noise from the street, but they also serve great coffee, and food, and the WiFi connection is stable. Seating is also outside, so your laptop should be fully charged when you get there. From there, you can see the ocean and occasionally you see some surf skaters carving down the road in front of the bar.
The Burger Café
This is Charlie’s favourite lunch place in Playa de las Américas: The Burger Café. It is two doors next to the Blackstone Surf Centre and there is a great selection of Burgers, Tacos, and Poke Bowls – perfect lunch after surfing! Charlie has not tried to work from there because it was always busy around lunchtime, but it seemed to be quiet in the morning and afternoons and there is also WiFi.
Travel tip: Medical insurance
Wherever you travel, it is always recommended to take out travel medical insurance. Charlie has chosen Safetywing as her insurance provider, because they cover adventure sports. After all, surfing is the main reason to stay and work from Tenerife!
Bonus: Lunch at Flo’s
There is one place Charlie can highly recommend for lunch in Playa de las Américas: Flo’s. It’s just behind The Burger Café, a bit further up the street where La Ola Surf Bar is. The waiters at Flo’s are very friendly, and super talkative and serve great smoothies, wraps, and chili. It’s not suitable to work from though.
