1993 World Champion Derek Ho dies aged 55

The surf world has lost another legend

He was the first native Hawaiian surfer to win the World Championship title in 1993. Derek Ho was not only a legend within the surf community but also the icon of a whole family of successful surfers, amongst them Coco Ho and Mason Ho.

The news of his death is taken with much regret. He died on 17th July 2020 after suffering a heart attack.

Looking back at a successful career

Derek Ho, or Uncle Ho as he is known amongst surfers, won the world title in 1993 as the first Hawaiian surfer at the age of 29, he was a two time Pipe Master and won the Triple Crown four times throughout his career.

To pay a tribute to the North Shore icon that mentored and influenced a whole generation of surfers, the surf community shared their feelings on social media, amongst them famous surfers the we know from the Momentum Generation such as Kalani Robb and Mick Fanning and current title contenders that Charlie has seen last year at the Quiksilver Pro France such as Conner Coffin, Jadson Andre, Ezekiel Lau and John John Florence:
