Two birthdays and a farewell

Evenings amongst surfers

The week started with Marta’s birthday on Monday. The same as Charlie, Marta was staying at the surf hostel in Conil for a little while. The original plan was for all the girls to have a pick nick together in the late afternoon at the beach in El Palmar. Somehow the pick nick turned into a beach party where everybody who knew somebody brought somebody.

It was the end of November and it could get quite chilly in the evenings. The girls were not prepared for that. After all, it was only meant to be a pick-nick in the afternoon. The white knight who came that night to save them all from the cold was called Kevin. The girls hadn’t met him before and they didn’t even know who had brought him to the party, but he had an impressive stock of hoodies in the van that he started distributing to all those that felt cold.

The return-the-jumper-party

The morning after the spontaneous beach party, they all felt a slight hangover, but Charlie had to get some work done and was as usual the first one up at the hostel. Sabina walked in and was still proudly wearing the jumper, which was three sizes too big but very comfy. Charlie was wondering how they would return them as Kevin certainly wanted them back. Since nobody knew where Kevin had actually come from, they had no idea. When Frankie walked in to have breakfast, she shed some light. Her friend Juan had messaged her in the morning about the return of the jumpers.

Just after lunch, the girls drove to El Palmar. It was almost a tradition for them to have coffee and cake at A-Frame when there was nothing else to do (the sea was flat all week and they couldn’t surf). Charlie had fallen in love with the cheesecake!

The first who showed up was Juan, Frankie’s friend, and he was wearing a lovely jumper. A little later a guy came along the road on a surf skate. It was Kevin. If he had been wearing a jumper, they might have recognized him sooner. Instead, he was wearing a lovely jacket that quickly turned out to not be his own. Ale, who was working at A-Frame, stepped out of the shop with the words: “Is that my jacket?” Well, at least, Kevin now had a few layers of jumpers that he could wear upon return of the jacket. He joined the girls for a coffee at A-Frame and later for a skate and beer at Homies.

Bye, bye Noah

It was an early night that Tuesday. The girls still felt a bit fragile after the beach party. Wednesday, however, was a different story. It was Noah’s last day before flying back home on Thursday and she deserved a proper farewell. It also would be her birthday a few days later and they combined both occasions into one big party at the hostel.

Marta had offered to cook a traditional Polish dish. She was lucky though that there were a few additional helpers. It was a group of Polish girls that they knew from the Yoga classes in El Palmar. They joined them at the hostel that night and showed everybody who was not Polish, how to get a Pierogi in shape. A few things had to be improvised, but why would you need a rolling pin anyways if you can use an empty wine bottle for the dough?

They removed all stools and tables from the common area which with the support of YouTube would turn into a dancefloor/karaoke stage. As if the Pierogi hadn’t filled their stomachs, there had to be some space for cake. They had gotten Noah a carrot cake and candles as an early birthday treat.

The only thing that interrupted the singing and dancing that night were the occasional smoke breaks. There was a storm going on and it was raining heavily. They all had to squeeze under the tiny roof in front of the door to not get wet. In this sardines-in-a-can-type situation, it was practically impossible for Sabina to reach the door opener that had to read the fingerprint to release the lock. Somebody else had to provide a finger or to say it with Sabina’s words, somebody “had to finger her.” Charlie leaves the rest of the night to your imagination.
