Cactus Coliving La Gomera

Community, living and working in San Sebastian de la Gomera

La Gomera as a destination had been on Charlie’s list ever since she stayed in the room by that name in The Roof in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The picture on the wall made her want to go and see it.

When Charlie noticed that there was a coliving in La Gomera, her decision was made. She spent three weeks on that island in the months of January and February – her preferred time of the year to travel to the Canary Islands.

Cactus Coliving

It is no coincidence that this coliving bears the same name as the one in Valle San Lorenzo in Tenerife, both are owned by the same person and the community extends across both islands. Similar to the one in Tenerife, there are volunteers to facilitate community activities and keep the place clean and tidy. There’s a weekly community dinner and a trip to explore the island every Saturday.

Community activities at Cactus Coliving in La Gomera

When Charlie was there, the trips were a tour to Valle Gran Rey, a hike to the natural pools in Hermigua and a lunch and hike to the Garajonay National Park. There are always two suggestions for the trip on Saturday and all colivers can vote. Participation in the trips is optional, however Charlie recommends you join because there is no better way to explore the island of La Gomera.

The community manager in La Gomera is Rebeca who is also a tour guide on the island and knows the best corners. Charlie also joined her for a walking tour in San Sebastian and absolutely loved it! You couldn’t be in better hands.

Other community activities in La Gomera involved volleyball on the beach, Yoga, early morning walks to see the sunrise at the lighthouse, communal cooking, Mojo workshops, movie nights and whistling classes. Yes, you read that right, whistling classes. It is a tradition in La Gomera that is part of the immaterial UNESCO world heritage. At the end of your stay at Cactus, you might be able to communicate with your colivers in the local whistling language.

The house at Cactus Coliving in La Gomera

The house has a completely different layout than the Cactus in Tenerife. The rooms are all along the patio which makes it a very sociable place. You definitely meet the other colivers on your way to the kitchen, the bathroom or the co-working space.

There is a spacious kitchen, a coworking-space and a living room with a giant TV. In the patio, you’ll find bean bags, tables, a hammock and a ping-pong table – all next to the board that shows the activities for the week.

There are 9 rooms, some of them are suitable for double occupancy and two shared rooms. The rooms are either facing the patio or the road, upstairs are some rooms with balcony.

The house is in a residential area and only a 15-minute walk from the ferry to and from Tenerife. There are supermarkets and the farmers market within 5 minutes walking distance. The bus station and the beach too are only a short walk away. You’ll have everything you need at your doorstep.

Fill your suitcase with memories, adventures and stories.
